After a very full and magnificent spring season of performing, Sara Mearns of New York City Ballet has been promoted to principal.  She performed in a huge amount of the repertoire this season and I cannot think of a performance where she wasn’t in top form.  Since being plucked from the corps in 2006 to perform as Odette in Peter Martins’ Swan Lake, Sara has gained a lot of well-deserved attention and praise for her dancing, and she’s grown tremendously since that time, in terms of both technique and artistry.  Her lush movement quality and lyricism have become trademarks of her dancing.  This promotion is well-merited after such an impressive and memorable season of performing, and not at all surprising.  Congratulations, Sara!
